Dog Shipping Dubai
Almost every dog that flies into or out of Dubai travels as manifested air cargo, because Emirates carries no pets in the passenger cabin. Most owners discover that late, and the first question is always the same one: what actually happens to my dog down there?
The short answer is that the live-animal hold is pressurised to the same cabin altitude you are sitting in, held between 7.2°C and 29.5°C, and your dog is loaded last and offloaded first. This guide sets out the conditions, the day hour by hour, what it costs in Dubai, and the five reasons dogs get refused at the cargo terminal.

What shipping a dog actually means
"Shipping" is the trade word for manifested air cargo. Your dog travels on its own air waybill rather than on your ticket, in a designated live-animal compartment, handled by the airline's cargo division rather than by baggage.
That is not a downgrade, and it is not optional out of Dubai. Emirates carries no pets in the passenger cabin at all, and does not accept cats and dogs as checked baggage — they move through Emirates SkyCargo. The one exception anywhere in the UAE is Etihad, which carries pets up to 8 kg including the carrier in the cabin on its own flights to and from Abu Dhabi, excluding destinations such as the UK, the United States and Australia. For a dog of any real size, that exception does not apply.
Cargo also has an advantage people rarely hear about: it is the only booking type that gives you confirmed space. Cabin and baggage allocations are capped per aircraft and can be withdrawn on the day. A cargo booking is space you actually hold. The mechanics of the whole process are in our guide to pet shipping Dubai, and the commercial side — tiers, what is handled for you — sits on dog relocation Dubai.
The question everyone asks
What the hold is actually like
Every shipper writes "pressurised and temperature-controlled" and stops there. Here are the actual figures the industry works to, so you can judge it yourself rather than take a reassurance on trust.
Three things follow from those numbers that are worth understanding.
Not every hold qualifies. Live animals travel in a specific compartment that meets heating and ventilation requirements — typically a forward hold. An aircraft can have pressurised cargo space that is not approved for animals, which is one reason your dog's crate size limits which aircraft can carry it at all.
The risk is on the ground, not in the air. In flight, conditions are controlled. The exposure happens during loading, transfer and offload, which is exactly why the 45-minute cap exists and why summer departures out of Dubai go at night. Carriers with proper live-animal programmes shuttle animals to and from the aircraft separately from bulk freight rather than sending them out on the same train of containers.
Loaded last, offloaded first. Standard practice for live animals, and the reason a direct flight matters more than a cheap one. Every connection adds another loading cycle, another transfer, another period on a tarmac.
What we will not tell you
That flying is risk-free, or that your dog will be relaxed. No honest shipper can promise how an individual animal copes with a journey — that depends on its health, temperament, breed and age, and it is a conversation for your vet as much as for us. What we can describe is the environment, which is the part that is actually specified and measurable.
Conditions above are the standard carriers operate to under live-animal handling rules, alongside the container standards published in the IATA Live Animals Regulations.
Hour by hour
The day of the flight
This is the sequence for a managed shipment out of Dubai. Knowing it in advance removes most of the anxiety, because nothing on the day is a surprise.
-
The night before
A normal evening, in the crate
Last full meal roughly 12 hours before departure, water available throughout. Your dog sleeps in the travel crate it has been using at home for weeks. No sedation — it depresses breathing at altitude and carriers refuse sedated animals.
-
6 hours out
Collection and a last walk
Collection from your door, a proper walk, water, then the drive to the cargo terminal. Light food only, if anything at all.
-
4–6 hours out
Lodgement at the cargo terminal
Live-animal acceptance closes two to four hours before passenger baggage, so this happens long before you would check in for your own flight. The crate is measured against the IATA specification, documents are checked against the air waybill, and every microchip number is matched across every certificate.
-
2–4 hours out
The animal holding area
Your dog waits in a climate-controlled animal holding facility, not on a warehouse floor and not in a passenger hall. Water is topped up. This is the quietest part of its day.
-
Departure
Loaded last
Animals are shuttled to the aircraft separately from bulk cargo and loaded last, to keep the outdoor exposure inside the 45-minute window. On a managed move you get confirmation with the flight number before the doors close.
-
Arrival
Offloaded first, then inspected
Your dog comes off before the freight and goes to the animal reception facility. For arrivals into Dubai, the MOCCAE veterinary officer checks the microchip against the import permit, health certificate and vaccination record. Every number must match. What happens at the terminal itself is covered in our Dubai airport walkthrough.
-
Release
Customs, then home
Customs clearance, then release — and only to the consignee named on the air waybill, whose identification must match that name exactly. A mismatch here is the single most common avoidable delay in the whole process.
What decides whether your dog can fly
Four factors, settled before anything is booked. Each one has a guide of its own, because each can end a plan on its own.
Breed
The UAE prohibits import of Pit Bulls, mastiff types, Japanese Tosa and their hybrids — no permit, fee or appeal changes that. Airlines keep separate lists of their own, and the two do not always agree.
Snout
Snub-nosed breeds have shortened airways that cope badly with heat and stress. Carriers embargo them seasonally or year-round. It narrows the airline list rather than closing the door, but in a Dubai summer it can close it entirely.
Size
Size sets the crate, the crate sets the volumetric weight, and volumetric weight sets both the price and which aircraft can carry the shipment. Giant breeds need a custom wooden container built to IATA CR82.
Age and documentation
Minimum age on arrival into the UAE is 12 weeks from a low-risk country and 15 from a high-risk one. The microchip must be implanted before or on the same day as the rabies vaccination, or the vaccination is not recognised at all.
Bringing a dog the other way — into Dubai from abroad — is set out step by step in how to bring a dog to Dubai. Cats follow a different crate and temperament profile entirely; see cat shipping Dubai.
The crate
Four measurements, taken standing: nose to base of tail, ground to elbow, width across the shoulders, and ground to the top of the head or ear tips. The crate that follows must let your dog stand fully upright without its ears touching the roof, turn around completely, and lie down naturally.
Get it wrong small and the shipment is refused at acceptance. Get it wrong large and you pay for it on every kilometre, because airlines bill live animals on volumetric weight — length × width × height in centimetres, divided by 6,000 — rather than on what the dog weighs. A medium crate at 91 × 61 × 69 cm works out at roughly 64 kg chargeable against about 30 kg of actual dog and crate.
The full specification, the size chart and the construction checklist are in our IATA crate guide. Send us four numbers and we will specify it for you, whether or not you buy the crate from us.
Real figures
What dog shipping costs from Dubai
Cargo rates themselves are quoted per shipment rather than published, because they depend on chargeable weight, route and season. The ground charges in Dubai are more predictable, and most shippers will not print them.
| Item | Typical | What drives it |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai import fees, one dog | Around AED 2,538 | Service fee, MOCCAE import permit, pet release fee, customs clearance and airline ground handling combined |
| Cargo handling | AED 3,000–8,000 | Origin country, airline and size of animal |
| IATA crate | AED 300–1,200 | Size. Custom CR82 wooden containers are quoted against the build |
| Freight | Chargeable weight | The greater of actual and volumetric weight — in practice, the crate |
| Foufoufly service | From AED 4,000 | Essentials from 4,000, Managed from 8,000, White Glove from 15,000, inclusive of 5% VAT |
Season moves the total more than owners expect. Between June and September, Dubai averages 39–41°C against an acceptance ceiling around 29.5°C, so every shipment goes out at night on a narrower set of flights with finite live-animal capacity. Booking a July move in May costs more than booking it in March.
The full breakdown by route is in our pet relocation cost guide. For a fixed figure on your actual move, ask for a pet relocation quote — 24 hours, no obligation.
Most-run dog routes: UK to Dubai, USA to Dubai, Australia to Dubai, Dubai to the UK and Dubai to Australia.
Why dogs get refused at acceptance
A refusal means a rebooking, often a fresh health certificate, and always a delay. Five causes account for nearly all of them, and every one is preventable the day before.
- The crate is undersized. The most common cause by a distance. Acceptance staff measure on the day and the dog must stand without its ears touching.
- The microchip does not match the paperwork. One transposed digit between the permit, the health certificate and the chip itself is enough.
- The health certificate is outside its window. Issued too early, or the flight moved and nobody reissued it.
- Temperature at origin, transit or destination. Forecast above the acceptance ceiling anywhere on the itinerary and the shipment does not travel — which is why summer bookings are built around night departures.
- The breed is on a list nobody checked. Either the destination's or the carrier's. These are separate lists and both apply.
Notice that four of the five are administrative. The flight itself is the reliable part; the paperwork is where moves fail.
Experience
Shipping a dog with Foufoufly
Five hundred relocations, zero rejections. We hold direct cargo accounts with Emirates SkyCargo, Etihad Cargo, Qatar Airways Cargo, IAG Cargo, Lufthansa Cargo and AFKLMP Cargo, so when a breed or a season narrows the options we ask six airlines at once rather than waiting on one.
A recent move
A family moving from Dubai to Manchester with a German Shepherd had bought a crate online that measured correctly on paper. Standing, the dog's ears touched the roof by about two centimetres — enough to be refused at acceptance, and they would have found out at the terminal with a flight booked. We caught it at the measurement stage, rebuilt to the next size up, adjusted the quote for the extra volumetric weight, and he flew on the original date.
Sam Jamal founded Foufoufly after seeing how opaque this process is from the owner's side. The practice is IPATA-aligned, every shipment is crated to the IATA Live Animals Regulations, and permits are filed against the current published requirements from MOCCAE and the destination authority.
FAQ
Dog shipping Dubai — frequently asked questions
Is the cargo hold safe for dogs?
The live-animal compartment is pressurised to a cabin altitude of no more than 8,000 feet — the same standard as the passenger cabin — and held between 7.2°C and 29.5°C, with exposure outside that band capped at four hours and transfers to and from the aircraft capped at 45 minutes. Dogs are loaded last and offloaded first. No shipper can promise how an individual animal will cope, but those are the conditions it travels in.
Can my dog fly in the cabin from Dubai instead?
Not from Dubai. Emirates carries no pets in the passenger cabin and does not take cats and dogs as checked baggage, so they travel through Emirates SkyCargo as manifested cargo. The one UAE exception is Etihad, which carries pets up to 8 kg including the carrier in the cabin on flights to and from Abu Dhabi — small breeds only, and the UK, the United States and Australia are among the excluded destinations.
How early do I need to be at the cargo terminal?
Four to six hours before departure. Live-animal acceptance closes two to four hours earlier than passenger baggage cut-off, so lodgement happens well before you would check in for your own flight. The crate is measured against the IATA specification at that point and every microchip number is checked against every document.
How much does it cost to ship a dog from Dubai?
Ground charges in Dubai run around AED 2,538 for a single dog, covering the service fee, MOCCAE permit, release fee, customs clearance and airline ground handling, with cargo handling adding roughly AED 3,000–8,000 depending on origin, airline and size. Freight itself is charged on volumetric weight rather than the dog's weight. Our service starts at AED 4,000 for Essentials.
Should my dog be sedated for the flight?
No. Sedation depresses breathing at altitude and carriers refuse sedated animals. The alternative that works is crate acclimatisation — the container at home for weeks beforehand, door open, fed inside it, so the crate is a familiar bed rather than a strange box the dog meets on the worst morning of its year.
Why do summer flights out of Dubai cost more?
Because carriers will not accept live animals when temperatures along the itinerary exceed roughly 29.5°C, and Dubai averages 40°C in June and 41°C in July and August. Every summer shipment therefore goes out at night, on fewer flights, into finite live-animal capacity. Confirmed space becomes the scarce thing, and scarcity sets the price.
